High Performance Spectroscopy with Quantum Cascade Lasers

Very high precision spectroscopy (think: particle physics) is driving improvements in the use of quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). Physicists at the University of Paris have found a way to stabilize QCLs in the mid wave infrared to one part in 1e14. A preview of this work is summarized in Nature (Photonics). This does not do much to help most technology developers, but the underlying techniques used to get this performance boost are often helpful in opening up new applications for lasers and sensors in industrial and consumer markets.
